Make It Happen profiles a BlackPlanet.com member who is making strides in his or her career. Members are invited to share their experiences and advice about what it takes to advance in the professional world.
This week LegendNYC gives advice on making it in the music industry.
Q: How did you get into music?
A: I had music when I was growing up. On my mother`s side of the family they had a piano. I think what used to happen back in the old days, going way back, before T.V. and radio and all that, folks used to gather around the piano and sing. I think my mother grew up with that in that sort of family structure. And she gave that to her kids.
Q: What was your first entry into working as a musician?
A: Playing in high school bands. I played at a lot of neighborhood bands, a lot of rock and roll, a lot of cover bands, whatever was popular at the time. And, as time went on, I went on and met people outside of my neighborhood throughout the city and I met up with a group of guys, particularly a drummer and a bass player who were in kind of like a jazz band at the time. The three of us started auditioning singers and other musicians at that point and we got together kind of an R&B soul band that was pretty popular for a while and we recorded a few demos and we recorded quite a bit around the city for about a year or two. But, then again, money became an issue. We didn`t really have any management. We were kind of on our own and it was just one of those things where we didn`t get the break I guess we were looking for.
Q: What would you say was the main reason you never got that break you were looking for?
A: I guess like having a baseball team or basketball team, if you have that coach, the manager, somebody who has the experience who can really make the decision that everybody is going to agree to, it makes a big difference. We were trying to be democratic and give everybody an equal say. But, what happened a lot of times, things did not get done or you would have a lot of bitterness some times because things weren`t going the way a certain person felt things needed to go. I think if we`d had somebody who had some experience in the business, who would have mentored us or given us a helping hand, that might have made the difference. Because again, we had a sound, we had the energy, we had the ambition. I think it was just a matter of having the leadership.
Q: So, if you had it to do over again, what steps do you think you would do differently?
A: I know one of the things that we did after plugging away at it for about a year is we met with an attorney in the music business. I think a lot of times it`s just good to get professional advice. In other words, somebody who is in the business who will either work with you or provide you their services. Because, again, one of the big disadvantages that young groups have coming up is that they are ignorant of the business and there is a lot of business to it. And, as far as contracts, agreements, what you`re entitled to and really who pays the bills, I think if we had kind of gotten a handle on that or if we had somebody who had that understanding, it would have helped us a great deal.
People who are creative, they`re worried about the music, that`s their main
focus. A lot of times they don`t worry about the business ends of things. But,
that`s really where the money is. I mean, for the most part, the most successful
people in the music industry are the people who are behind the scenes, the producers,
the guys who are pulling the shows together rather than the people who are up
on stage. That`s always been true. I think that`s something that most performers
come to realize kind of a little late in life. They feel like, once I have a
record deal, that`s it. But, meanwhile, you have a lot of really, high profile
groups, TLC, Toni Braxton who had to file for bankruptcy because of agreements
that they made. The money was not going to them, it was going to somebody else.
And, again, these were very successful acts. For smaller groups, it`s even more
important.
Q: What other advice you would give?
A: Be realistic about what your talents are and again what the likelihood of success is. Family and friends are often very supportive but get advice beyond friends and family. It can be very disheartening or very discouraging to really get the opinion of someone in the industry because they will not pull any punches. They will let you know, "Well, you don`t have the range, you don`t have the power, the note that you`re hitting are flat," or something like that. I mean, it`s great to be passionate about the things you do, but make sure you are basing this in reality too. Make sure you`re getting input from beyond your circle of friends.
Q: What would you say is the number one mistake that you see people making? Would it be something along those lines?
A: A lot of it sometimes just depends upon how you look, how you present yourself. Again, it`s more than just your voice or your instrument. People now these days will go by the costume that you`re wearing and the steps that you know. In fact, that was one thing that we were very aware of when we stepped out on stage at the Apollo, is that as soon as you`re walking out on stage, people are forming it then, before you even open your mouth, people are already judging you and were making a decision as to whether they were going to boo or they`re going to cheer. And, again, that`s probably one of the toughest crowds in the world
Q: I`m sure you get a lot of questions, people asking you about what advice you can give them in terms of getting on the Apollo show, what do you tell them?
A: Make sure that you approach it like a business. Make sure you have a business card made up with your contact information. Make sure you have an eight by ten glossy so that people will remember what you look like. And, also have some of your demos, some of the songs you recorded, either your own material or other people`s material available on cassette or CD preferably. People will only remember you with what you leave behind. In other words, you can spend an hour talking with somebody but the next day, if they don`t have something to remember you by, you`ll just be a dim memory.

| excellent advice | |
| Reading Legend`s advice was a breath of fresh air for me. It was based on truth. An artist or group has to know their genre, have wonderful team,(management, lawyer, agent, etc.), have image and be prepared to present themselves through demos and photos, being able to perform live is also a plus :) ! Also an artist needs to get music business enducation, books and seminars help. | |

| Well Said | |
| Legend`s experiences are common among may aspiring artists. Not only in the music industry, but other art forms as well. Currently, I create commercials in a Hip Hop format which air on a major market urban radio station and I am interested in knowing more about getting in with agencies that hire talent for commercials. If there is anyone that can offer any words of advice please drop me a note or an email. Thanks and continue working hard! Peace. | |

| Terrible Experience | |
| First
of all this is an experience that opened my eyes to the industry.I was
17 at the time and i`ve been singing since I was 8 but i`ve been performing
since I was 9 I`ve been serious about the business since I was 10.Well
it came a time when I went to this audition for this talent agency I auditioned
and blew him away.So come to find out he was a preacher so I was like
ok he`s cool.So he asked if my mom could come to one of the meetings and
I was like sure cause I was underage and when she came to the meeting
that was the day we talked over me signing the contract and that was the
day that my life was falling down.So he was cool he called and checked
on me and was setting up meetings. So one night he called at like 11:30
and he was like am I going to get you in trouble and i`m like no what`s
wrong and he was like I had a dream and I was like ok and he said It was
me and you and we were married and I`m all scared and about to ang up
the phone and I was like ok I have to get off the phone so the next day
he called and told me that a record company wanted to sign me for whatever
point million dollars and I was like yea right and he kept on calling
me trying to get me to sign this contract and I never heard of them.So
I looked it up on the web and this was a company that sold cds this wasn`t
a record lable at all.So I started no returning his calls because he was
trying to get me messed up.He started comming to my job bothering me so
finally he left the state and I haven`t heard from him since. So the moral
of my story is be careful if you`re young always get you a lawyer ask
a lot of questions if you do`t they`ll try to run over you. That experience
also made me stronger and I know as long as I have God by my side my dream
will come true. Charlester |

| great article! | |
| i really
enjoyed this article. I have been involved in music all my life. I have
done lots of production on demos and I have had many meetings with a&rs
and various label personel yet i have not signed a major contract. Am
i discouraged ? No! Why ? because I love the art itself. yes I agree that
it is very important to learn the business side of everything but before
you learn the business you have to perfect your art.you can`t run a business
without a product. I think the most informative information that i gathered from this article was "be realistic about what your talents are".yes there are plenty of people out here making alot of money and topping the charts who don`t have an ounce of talent but they are marketable.Trust me, thats not going to happen to everybody, so make sure you always come correct.Nothing is more important than the art! |

| advice from a girl | |
| I just
wanted to add that its very important for band members of a group to be
on the same page. Meaning...if an a&r person sees your group performing
at a club and wants you guys to immediately fly out to california to sign
a deal....all of the band members must be ready to fly. If you really
want to be in the industry, you have to be ready to drop everything and
go. If your bass player dosen`t want to go because of whatever reason,
remember that it is not easy finding a bassist with the same chemistry
as your old bassist. It could possibly ruin your band`s sound and ruin
a record deal! And guys...;don`t make passes or stare at your female guitarist..... its not a cool situation for her and she may leave your group. |

| Re: advice from a girl | |
| If
an A&R person sees your group & wants to sign you & the group right away,
you talk to your manager & bandmates first before making that kind of
comitment. More than likely, if you`re quick to sign a deal, more than
likely, the terms and conditions may not be in your favor. You could be
stuck in a multi-album deal w/a weak royalty rate & no control over your
career & master tapes. You`re in a far better position if a label wants you than you wanting them. |

| I was reading through the article in the Make It Happen section of black planet and came across your request. I can`t say that I have any talent whatsoever but I have a friend who is extremely talented. I haven`t even asked his permission to do this but I was afraid if I didn`t I would feel as if I failed him as a friend. He sings, plays the piano, and has written some of his own music. He has amazing style that can`t be defined besides saying it`s just him and it`s got to be seen to understand. He is 19 years old. I would appreciate if anything a just send me a note on here, thank you, Rachel | |

| To
whom it may concern, I agree with legend`s advice whole-heartedly. I`ve been in this business for eight years now, and I`ve seen them come and go. The truth is that the industry is about 10% of music and 90% business. If you`re not educated to what`s going on, consider your ignorance the cause of your demise! Keep true, never stop moving forward and you`ll reach success in all accounts. Meanwhile, learn EVERYTHING you can about your surroundings, it`ll make you a better person. I have a lot more insight and advice for anyone who`s interested. If so, contact me at: D-M-C@blackplanet.com or donavin_campbell@hotmail.com! Good luck, The Millennium Child |

| MY STORY | |
| HI
BLACKPLANET AND I HAPPEN TO BE A BACKGROUND VOCALIST AND I HAVE WORKED
WITH SOME OF THE BEST FROM CHAKA KHAN, MONICA, GLADYS KNIGHT, TAMIA AND
BRANDY AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. I HAVE BEEN SINGING SINCE I WAS 3 YEARS OLD AND I ALWAYS KNEW THAT I WANTED TO BE BEHIND A MICROPHONE. I FORMED A GROUP BACK IN 1996 CALLED "FLAME" WITH SHAMARI OF THE GROUP BLAQUE, DAWN, WHO IS CURRENTLY SIGNED WITH TYSON RECORDS AND TOYA WHO IS SIGNED TO ARISTA RECORDS. ONE THING I LEARNED ABOUT BEING IN A GROUP IS THAT YOU HAVE ALOT OF "CREATIVE DIFFERENCES" AND THAT CAUSED SO MUCH CONFLICT WHICH EVENTUALLY CAUSED US TO GO OUR SEPERATE WAYS. IT HAD BEEN YEARS SINCE I SEEN SHAMARI UNTIL I SAW BLAQUE`S FIRST VIDEO "808", IT HAD BEEN YEARS SINCE I SEEN TOYA BUT LAST WEEK I JUST SEEN HER VIDEO FOR HER NEW SONG "I DO" AND I STILL HAVENT SEEN DAWN TO THIS DAY! THE THING I AM TRYING TO SAY IS THAT FOR ME BEING IN A GROUP REQUIRED ALOT OF FAITH AND PRAYER FOR ME BECAUSE IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE WE NEVER SPOKE AGAIN ONCE THE GROUP FEEL APART AND THAT`S ASHAME! THEN AFTER THAT EPISODE I MET Q FROM 112 AND HE INTRODUCE ME TO A GUY NAME TONY HAWTHORN WHO HAD CONNECTIONS IN THE INDUSTRY AND HE TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE LOOKING FOR BACKUP SINGERS FOR CHAKA KHAN. ME BEING SO SPIRITUALLY AND EMOTIONALLY DRAINED FROM BEING IN A GROUP FOR A YEAR WITH 3 GIRLS THAT I DIDNT HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH I TURNED IT DOWN. MY MOMMY HAD TO DRAG ME TO LA TO DO THE AUDITIONS BECAUSE SHE TOLD ME THAT I COULDNT GIVE UP ON MY DREAM BECAUSE OF SOME MISHAPS THAT HAPPENED IN MY LIFE AND SHE WAS RIGHT. I AUDITIONED AND OUT OF 200 PEOPLE I WAS ONE OF THE 5 TO MAKE IT. I TOURED WITH CHAKA KHAN AND THEN I STARTED TO GET MORE GIGS AND I REALIZED THAT I LOVED BEING BEHIND THE SPOTLIGHT AND THIS HAS TO BE THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME! SO IF YOUR SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING GETTING IN THE INDUSTRY KEEP GOD FIRST!! IT IS GOING TO REQUIRE ALOT OF SPIRITUALITY AND BELEIF! IF YOU BELEIVE IT YOU CAN ACHEIVE IT! NEVER HAVE SOMETHING YOU CAN FALL BACK ON BECAUSE IF YOU DO, YOU WILL BE MOST LIKELY TO GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS OF BECOMING A STAR! PEACE I HOPE TO SEE YOU SOMEDAY! |
